We're excited to announce our Recurring Orders app for Shopify is now integrated with Shoelace for retargeting subscription purchases. 💰 💰
Plenty of eCommerce store owners are downright obsessed with optimizing their PPC campaigns and Facebook ad campaigns…
Welcome to season 2 of School of Commerce!!
If you're new around here, I'll give you a quick rundown. School of Commerce is a free livestream that we host every 2 weeks with the main goal of helping entrepreneurs become eCommerce experts. Basically, we want to make running your online store as easy as possible! It's great because it's live, so you can ask questions at anytime to get personalized advice for your store.
Let’s get real…
People don’t shop at Walmart because the guy who started it had a compelling story to share that connected them with the experience. (Although Sam Walton’s story is actually really interesting, and I do recommend you check it out.)
They shop at Walmart because of the low prices and extreme convenience.
But you’re not WalMart. And you shouldn’t want to be.
When people shop at your store (website), they probably aren’t there for low prices or extreme convenience. They’re there because you have a cool product or a strong brand presence.
My whole life, whenever I heard the word “upsell” images of car salesmen or fast food restaurants sprang to mind. I mean, the words, “would you like fries with that” are the thing of legends!
But now that I’m a store owner myself, upsells are legendary for a whole new reason: It’s the easiest way I’ve found to not only move more product, but to make more money on every single sale that goes through my store.
2017 was a special year at Bold. It's now been five years since launching our first app on Shopify and boy has a lot changed!
Little milestones like that help us reflect on where we've come from, and where we're going. This surprise video from our staff was something that really put it into perspective!
Our mission statement at Bold is to "Empower entrepreneurs to achieve success by building the best company to attract the best employees who truly give a shit." And with that as our mission, to go from our basement five years ago to over 170 employees and 90,000+ merchants using our apps today, is truly humbling.
We’ve written before about the effects that an amazing returns policy can have on your online store.
And we found out a whopping 91% of shoppers asked said they check a website’s return policy before they ever make a purchase. Which makes sense. When making a purchase from a brick-and-mortar store, the feeling is a little more real. You can feel and test the product you’re buying to make sure it’s exactly what you want.
This experience is lost on online shoppers; they can’t touch or hold the thing they’re about to pay for, so every purchase is a bit of a gamble.
We want to help you take the uncertainty out of the buying process, so keep reading to find out how to set up an awesome returns policy on your store that will gain your customers trust and help them complete their purchase.
When was the last time you revised your return policy?
Hell, when was the last time you even looked at it?
An eCommerce return policy is often an afterthought when building your website. “Oh crap, we need a return policy! Let’s just generate a generic one and put our name on it, it’ll be fine.”
If you’ve done this (and don’t worry, you’re not alone - I did it for three of my online stores) you’re leaving money on the table.
Everyone loves a good deal.
Doesn’t seeing that perfect bundle at a reduced price just make you so happy? There’s a reason for that!
It lies in psychology and marketing research. Which we’ll get into…
But the main focus of this article is to teach you the best eCommerce product bundling strategies, and how to use them to increase your store’s income.
There’s no worse feeling than letting your customers down.
And with 15% of shoppers waiting until well into December to start buying, you'll want to make sure you're doing everything possible to make sure they have their gifts in hand before the big day.
So, to avoid your customers having to blast you on social media while wrapping up a picture of the awesome gift they didn't receive, take a quick look below to find out how to avoid disappointing your customers this holiday season.
We all get excited at the prospect of increased holiday traffic and sales. But with each sale, there's another box, packing slip, and shipping label to be generated.
And what happens when you're also selling from Etsy or Ebay or on Amazon? It all gets jumbled when you're scrambling to get your packages out after Black Friday and the Christmas rush.
Hola, potential subscription box company owner!
If you’ve found your way to this article, I’m betting that you’ve already done your due diligence by reading up on why subscription boxes are an awesome business model.
If not, I can sum it up for you in two words: recurring payments. Every. Single. Month.
There’s no denying that Black Friday is huge for eCommerce.
Last year, Black Friday sales in the US grew by 17.7% from 2015.
In one day alone, we collectively spent a jaw-dropping $3.34 billion dollars!
And as a entrepreneur and an eCommerce store owner, you’re probably doing all you can to capitalize on the Black Friday frenzy.
If you read our latest post, The Ultimate Black Friday Sales Round-up, then you've had a short intro to the idea of offering free shipping and gift wrapping during the holidays.
This is one of those sale ideas that may not jump off the page and really get you excited... but it should!
Black Friday is less than a week away, and if you haven't set up a sale yet, time is running out.
To help you out, we collected a list of some easy sale ideas that you can use to run an amazing Black Friday promotion. Most of these can be set up in just a few minutes on your Shopify store, and all of them are easily automated (so you can spend more time advertising and managing your business).
If you haven’t already heard, Augmented Reality (AR) is taking the world by storm.
‘Tis the time of year for holiday shopping, gift giving, and of course, sales and discounts. As we approach this busy shopping season, we know merchants like you are constantly thinking about the promotions and sales you plan on running.
We’ve covered a lot of different types of sales you could run this Black Friday already, but for this post, we're going to focus on promotions to sell more subscriptions using Bold's Recurring Orders app.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 22
If you're curious about how product photos can affect conversions, return rates, and the authenticity of your online store, watch this week's livestream to see Mike break down exactly why your product photos need to be moved to the top of your priority list!
Helping our community is something everyone at Bold Commerce strives to be a part of, and Extra Life is no exception! We're proud to be a part of our community, so we try to give back as much as we can.
This year we wanted to give back bigger than we ever have. Last year we raised over $4,000 with your support and put on a ~30 person LAN . This year we're aimed to host a 100 person LAN on game day with a goal of raising $20,000!.
Black Friday is less than a month away, so if you haven't already, now is the time to plan, prep, and most importantly let your customers know what's coming down the pipeline!
88% of small business owners say social media is effective for branding, content, marketing, and word of mouth.
So staying on top of your social game is key to your BFCM success. Incase you still need convincing, here are a few more reasons:
It wasn’t that long ago that people were getting pummeled and trampled by other humans trying to nab crazy Black Friday deals somewhere in middle America. Luckily, with Spently, your customers can access the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts directly from their inbox, and avoid having their face stepped on. Oh, what fun!
Free shipping is one of the greatest marketing tools available to an online store.
In a survey by Walker Sands Communications, 90% of people said that having an order ship for free is the biggest incentive to add more to their cart.
Not only are you helping your customers save money, but it's an awesome way to squeeze a little extra from every sale that goes through your store by encouraging visitors to add an extra product to their cart to reach that free shipping threshold.
One of the most common requests our support team receives is for help creating a Buy One, Get One offer. These special promotions give the customer a discount on a product when they purchase another item at full price.
In many cases, this is a great way to drive sales of slow-moving products or promote new items on your store.
One of the most obvious benefits of an eCommerce store is that location doesn't really matter; a customer from Australia can buy products from a business in the United Kingdom and have no idea their order is coming from thousands of miles away.
But one of the last remaining barriers to a truly global marketplace is differing currencies, which can make it difficult for consumers to understand the true cost of their purchases (sometimes scaring them away). Luckily, a new app from Bold has the solution to the currency conundrum.
36.5 billion dollars were spent last Black Friday. That’s 36.5 BILLION, with a B, and if you’re ready for the onslaught of consumers ready to spend their money on November 24th, your store could get a piece of that action.
Pura Vida Bracelets have become one of the most recognizable lifestyle brands on Shopify. They built a brand that fans and celebrities around the world embrace, and proudly wear, to represent the "Pure Life" mantra they stand for.
A little over a year go ther started their "Pura Vida Club", a monthly Shopify Subscription Box that has become widly popular! They have quickly become one of the most successful subscription business on Shopify ever, and in this post we'll dive deeper into their story.
You know those square bar codes that you can scan in stores using your phone? Those are QR codes, and lucky for us, Shopify recently announced the launch of Shopcodes: a QR-code based system that allows customers to scan and buy products using their mobile device.
We're excited to announce our Recurring Orders app for Shopify is now integrated with the Google Autocomplete system for checkout. 💰 💰
What are the best ways for Shopify sellers to increase repeat purchases?
Offering an amazing loyalty program with a fast and accurate “after the sale” experience is the perfect place to start. They create happier customers and encourage them to keep coming back for more!
One of the easiest ways to increase your average order value (AOV) this holiday season is with a classic upsell; a customer chooses an item to purchase, and as that item is added to the cart (or when they reach the checkout page) they're offered an upgrade to a bigger size or premium version.
The countdown to Black Friday is on (November 24th!) and as a Shopify merchant that probably means you’ve got a lot on your plate.
Amid the chaos of ramping up production, training new staff, and prepping campaigns - not to mention the daily hustle of running your store - it’s easy to miss some of the small but impactful things you can do to boost sales during the biggest shopping days of the year.
How would you like to double your revenue?
I bet that caught your attention. Well guess what - optimizing your eCommerce website can do just that. And more.
Today we introduce "True Upsells", a BIG improvement to the Bold Product Upsell app. Now you can offer customers two very different, but both very powerful, types of offers. A True Upsell offer is an "upgrade and replace" offer , and a Cross-sell offer is an "add an additional product" offer. They're both powerful selling tools, and now you can do both, with the Bold Upsell app!
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 20
If you're curious about drop shipping, watch this video to hear two real store owners talk about setting up their drop shipping businesses, the best apps to use to make it as easy as possible, and how you can have your own store up and running in just a few days.
Last week, when we announced Recurring Orders was the first subscription app for Shopify to be integrated with Addressy, we said more integrations were coming. We weren’t kidding.
We’re excited to announce Recurring Orders is now integrated with Klaviyo, the email marketing platform. 🔥 🔥
When it comes to the world of eCommerce, shipping is a tough nut to crack.
You might have started out doing everything by yourself - consolidating your orders, packing your items, and zipping out to the post office once a day.
But as your business grows and the number of orders you receive a day skyrockets, there comes a point when the DIY solution is no longer feasible. You know that you can’t put it off any longer; the time has come for you to bite the bullet and come up with a proper shipping strategy.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 19
It doesn't matter the size of your online store: if you're selling 5 handmade items or have 1,000+ products, this livestream will help you free up hours of your time every single week.
Subscriptions are everywhere these days.
From software, to coffee, bracelets, and fishing tackle - everything is being offered on a subscription basis - and for good reason. Subscriptions are one of the best ways to increase customer loyalty and value.
Being an eCommerce store owner around the holiday season can be ho-ho-horrible - but it doesn’t have to be! After all, 92% of holiday shoppers go online to research or purchase gifts. So in order to make the upcoming holiday season a lot less stressful, it’s important you create a comprehensive marketing strategy.
We had the absolute pleasure of taking over Shopify's Snapchat story on September 14!
Snapchat is a mobile app that allows you to take pictures or 10 second videos and share them in real time. Users can send their ‘snaps’ directly to one of their followers or add it to their ‘story’, which is then available to all their followers for 24 hours.
We're VERY excited to announce the launch of the first ever SUBSCRIPTION "Buy Button" for Shopify. It's an exclusive feature in our Shopify Recurring Orders app, and we think it's going to be a game changer for subscription businesses.
With one click, go from anywhere; your blog, ANY other blog or website, an email, a tweet, a description in a YouTube video, or an ad, directly to your checkout. Potential customers can now buy your subscription box products from anywhere!
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 18
Great customer service can earn you lifelong customers, less churn, and more sales.
That combined with the fact that new customers are 7 times more expensive to get than retaining existing ones should have you moving your customer service strategy to the top of your priority list.
When was the last time you were shopping online, made it to the cart page, and were told, "you're only $16.99 away from free shipping?" It's probably more than you even realize.
Have you ever wondered why online stores do that? Well, it's because it works! When customers know exactly how close they are to receiving a promotion (like free shipping or a free gift), you can increase their average checkout total by 20-30%.
“All data in aggregate is crap.” - analytics guru Avinash Kaushik
If you're like 90% of stores, you probably use Google Analytics to track traffic, and maybe even conversions. But, if you're also like 90% of stores, you probably DON'T leverage the power of segments to understand how different groups and types of customers interact with your store.
In this post we'll explain what segments are, and how to use them for your online store. We'll also share with you a link to download 19 of the most common segments our Professional Services pre-built, that every store owner should use.
WiFi Marketing is the new secret sauce in the marketing world, and lucky for you, we have the recipe.
During the holiday season, thousands of brick-and-mortar retailers will offer "gift with purchase" promotions, where customers who spend a certain amount during a sale will receive a free bonus gift.
These types of promotions are great for increasing the amount that customers spend on every order that goes through your store, also known as the average order value.
Want to grow your sales this year (and beyond)?
Then you can’t afford to rest on your laurels. You need to have your wits about you, and be quick to react to the ever-changing eCommerce landscape.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 17
If you've ever been curious about ad retargeting, today's your lucky day.
Our Growth Marketing Specialist Paul Rajotte joins us this week to walk us through everything from pixels to Facebook audience segments, covering everything you need to know about ad retargeting and how to use it to direct traffic to your online store to boost your sales.
It seems like natural disasters have taken over our news feeds for the past couple of months.
Wildfires have been burning through British Columbia the entire summer, floods in India have killed hundreds, and Hurricane Harvey has ripped across the Gulf Coast, leaving thousands of people in distress.
It's easy to feel helpless in the face of such destruction, and I know I often wish I could help out, but don't know where to start.
This is a guest post by Ramon Bez. Ramon is the Content Marketing Manager at Compass, a partner of Bold Commerce. If you're interested in learning about our Bold Partner Program, you can find more details here.
If you attend one of Amazon’s corporate meetings, you’re likely to find one seat empty at the conference table. Jeff Bezos, the company’s CEO, informs attendees that they should imagine that the empty chair is occupied by the customer: the most important person in the room.
One of the oldest sales tricks in the book is the classic upsell; a customer chooses an item to purchase, and the salesperson recommends an additional item (like a protection plan or extra batteries) to go along with it.
This strategy can work wonders for a store's bottom line, especially when they have immediate communication with the customer (like when they get to the cash register). But how can it be done online, where that personal interaction is difficult to replicate?
In this post, we'll show you how to do that, plus how to set up a high-converting upsell offer in less than 10 minutes.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 16
With the biggest user base of any other social media platform (2 BILLION monthly users!), you're throwing sales out the window if you're not advertising on Facebook.
Video is what people want.
Now I don't know about you, but personally, if I had a problem on my store, I’d much rather watch a quick video than read a support page.
Drop shipping seems like the answer to our eCommerce prayers.
It's easy to get started, has low overhead, and lets you carry a larger amount of products than you could if you had to physically produce and stock them yourself. And because you don’t have to worry about fulfillment or running a warehouse, you can run your drop shipping business anywhere in the world with just an internet connection and a laptop.
Doesn't that sound amazing?! Sign me up.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 15
60% of people say they discover new products on Instagram... 60%!
If that's not a good enough reason for your brand to be on Instagram, then you should definitely stop reading this post. If you like making sales, however, then keep reading.
Facebook Retargeting can bring high conversions at low costs.
Sounds like a dream, right? Yesss, I hear the marketer in me saying.
But Facebook Retargeting can be complicated. And there can be tons of questions...
The last item I bought?
A 2-pack of hand-carved Himalayan salt lamps for $22.99.
Did you know...
28% of consumers begin product discovery with a search engine.
And 95% of consumers click on organic listings when they search on desktop.
Fact is, SEO has the highest ROI of any eCommerce marketing campaign. Organic traffic is the best kind of traffic: Free and recurring.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 14
Wouldn't it be awesome if your Instagram ran itself? Or if you never had to worry about where your next Facebook post was coming from, and your engagement was sky high for every post?
It is possible, and we'll show you how!
What comes to mind when you think about your last experience as a customer? Did you walk away from the experience with good things to say, or did it leave much to be desired...
If your customer service sucks, it doesn't matter how good your product or marketing is. Customer service is something every company needs to get right to grow. Here's why:
No one thinks that one thing can make a difference: buying that one lottery ticket, trying a new restaurant, or eating that last piece of cake. But once in awhile it does! That one lottery ticket could be a winner, that restaurant could be your new favourite, and that last piece of cake could be the best damn piece of cake you've ever eaten.
And for our clients, downloading just one app made a HUGE impact on their bottom line.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 13
We’re kicking off our ‘Summer of Social’ with a lesson on how to use social media to generate sales and awareness for your online store.
Product reviews are the secret sauce of conversions.
Get this: 88% of consumers trust reviews as much as personal recommendations.
That’s not all…
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 12
This week we're interviewing two store owners live, diving into their experiences opening their stores, social media channels they're using, strategies they've found successful, and their best piece of advice for people who are thinking about opening their own Shopify store.
Summer is here, and along with it the most patriotic day of the year: the 4th of July. Our feeds will soon be filled with fireworks, BBQ's, and of course everything red, white, and blue. And as you start planning which parties you're going to attend next week, don't forget to get started on your next marketing campaign.
Just like Valentines Day, Mothers Day, and Christmas, Independence Day should be a major date on your marketing calendar. With the average American spending approximately $300 each, retailers in every industry can take advantage of this spending bump by promoting their brands with a fun marketing campaign.
Take at look at these five ways to help drive traffic to your online store this Independence Day.
Dead by April is an up-and-coming metalcore band based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Formed in 2007, the four-member ensemble has grown in popularity significantly with the release of several albums and hit singles.
Their Facebook audience reaches over 425, 000 fans, and many of their videos on YouTube have view counts in the millions. The band has opened for big names such as Linkin Park and has toured to nearly every continent on the planet (they're still waiting for their Antarctic tour dates to be confirmed).
Read on to learn how they grew their margins quickly and easily using a Shopify store and our Marketplace app in a creative way!
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 11
Mike Trakalo joins us again this week as a follow up to our last webinar, How to double your email list in the next 30 days, and answers the age old question: so you have an email list, now what?!
Blogging used to be nothing more than an online diary.
Today, however, blogging has evolved into a serious marketing strategy. You may have heard of it: Content marketing.
Creating content like blog posts is one of the single most effective ways to drive traffic to your product pages.
Wanna know the secret to massive success?
Constantly learning and pushing yourself to step up your game.
One of the best ways to do that is by following the best eCommerce blogs on the internet. The wealth of free information these guys are pumping out is staggering!
Over the past 5 years we’ve worked with businesses of all sizes. From ‘mom and pop’ stores working out of their basements to Fortune 500 companies like: Google, Zippo, TimeLife, Cirque du Soleil, and P&G.
What we’ve learned along the way is different sized companies have different needs. A client looking for a few custom changes to their site might not want or care about detailed RFP’s, scope statements, and quotes. But if you’re a large corporation spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, you’ll want dedicated Project Managers, Business Analysts, Designers and Developers committed to your business the whole way through.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 10
Double your email list in 30 days?! It’s a Bold statement, we know (pun intended 😊), but we promise that even if you implement a few of these simple strategies, you'll see big results.
Customer service allows you to hit the hearts of your followers.
And any good brand shouldn’t just have customers… they should have followers. Brand advocates, even.
You get that by providing the absolute best customer service possible.
We’re excited to announce we will be touring with Shopify for Shop Class, a Canada-wide tour of 8 different cities, helping store owners and entrepreneurs grow their business.
We're always getting requests to help migrate subscription buisnesses from Cratejoy to Shopify. If you're on Cratejoy, or any other subscription marketplace for that matter, you might even be thinking about it right now! But when is the right time to buy your own domain, setup your own subscription store, and start building your brand. Here's our thoughts.
Two hours per day.
What would you do if you had a heart attack, and your doctor forbid you to work more than two hours per day, lest you suffer a stroke and die?
I think you’d be amazed at what you’d do. Humans are incredibly adaptive creatures.
We’ve conquered the sea and sky, built buildings that scrape the sky, and even sent massive metal hunks into space.
There’s no limit to what we can do…
Today we're excited to announce our latest feature to our Shopify Recurring Orders app, and it's a GOOD one! It's called Build-a-Box and it allows you to create custom box or meal-plan style subscriptions that customers can tweak each month a few days before the shipment goes out. The video explains it well.

Confused by remarketing? Don't know what dynamic ads are? During this week's webinar we'll dive deep into the world of social media advertising, starting with one of the most popular questions we received: when's the right time to transition from growing organically to looking at paid advertising.
Email lists are legendary.
Imagine pushing a button on Friday afternoon, then checking your store on Monday to see hundreds of sales come in over the weekend.
A returns app is a great way to keep your store organized.
It keeps you and your customers updated throughout the entire returns process, giving them more flexibility and control over how the return is handled while keeping everything organized on the back end.
But we decided to shake things up! With our latest release, we’re taking our Returns Manager app for Shopify to the next level by annoucing 5 new features that, believe it or not, make it even better!
The number one requested feature for our Product Options Shopify app has been the ability to show your customers what their selections look like when creating a custom product.
That's why we just upgraded the app in a major way: you now have the ability to show your customers customized swatches, giving them complete confidence in their purchase.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 7
SPECIAL GUEST: KURT ELSTER
From a faster checkout experience to brand new Shopify POS hardware, the announcements coming out of Shopify Unite 2017 didn't dissapoint.
You work so hard to get people to your site.
You spend hard-earned dollars on marketing, invest your precious time on social media, and send emails to your hard-won list.
They finally add something to their cart. Maybe they even make it to the checkout page.
And then…. abandoned cart.
Shopping cart abandonment is a huge problem for online stores. I mean, the average cart abandonment rate hovers around 70%.
This article is written to answer a single question:
What can you do, as a store owner, to stop people from leaving without buying?
We can't say it enough: our merchant's success is our success. Our company mantra is to "Build the best company to attract the best people who build the best products and provide the best support and services SO THAT we can empower entrepreneurs to achieve success."
You can imagine how thrilled we were when we saw one of our Managed Services clients land a spot on Inc’s 30 Under 30 list!
Are you thinking about switching your website to Shopify?
I can see why. Shopify has quickly become the go-to standard for eCommerce website design. Just ask their 400,000 clients.
Actually, you don’t have to ask them. Because we already did!
A lot can happen in 60 months.
As I sit here and write this, I look around the office at 130 people I didn’t know just 60 months ago. It’s a lot to take in. Some of the people, since starting at Bold, have got their first apartment, got married, had kids, purchased houses, and so much more. I often wonder, through spouses and families, just how many lives are affected by this company. When I pull up to the office and see a parking lot full of cars, I wonder where all these people would be if Bold didn’t exist. Not to mention the near 50,000 stores that rely on our apps and services daily to run their business. It’s truly a humbling feeling.
I lay in bed for what seemed like an eternity, staring at the ceiling endlessly. I couldn’t sleep. I had a big decision on my mind…
Migrating stores from Magento to Shopify Plus is one of the most common requests we get here at Bold. Generally, there's no extra incentive needed. People just prefer Shopify for many reasons, like Spikeball for example. If you've ever considered moving from Magento to Shopify Plus, with the promotion that went live this week, now would be a PERFECT time to do so!
I’m incredibly excited to announce our Partner Program has eclipsed 1,000 Partners, just over two years after initially launching our program. This is a milestone our team has been working towards for a while, as we continue to build new mutually-beneficial relationships and strengthening existing partnerships.
Over the past few weeks we’ve done a series of posts on everything you need to know to launch a successful Loyalty Program on your Shopify store. Today we're going tie it all together.
In our first post, we explored the benefits of offering a loyalty program on your store, different types of loyalty programs and rewards you could offer, and the groundwork necessary before launching.
In our second post, we took a peek into the world of marketing your loyalty program, including what communication channels to focus on, what to center your content around, different sale ideas for a successful launch, and how to measure your success.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 6
Regardless of your brand, business or product, if you're not already on social media, you should sign up today! Right now to be exact (well... maybe watch the webinar first).
Our resident social media guru Mike Trakalo will give you his best tips and tricks on setting up your social media strategy, how to get the most out of your time, and the best platforms to drive traffic to your store.
Today we're excited to announce our biggest Shopify app release to date! After close to 5 years of developing apps for Shopify, and listening to customers, we've learned a lot. In the past we thought building as many apps as possible was the key to success, and in our early days this certainly was true. In the last few years we've started learning that less really can be more, and our announcement today was born from that insight.
Did we mention we did all that AND cut their man hours to zero?
How would you like to increase your online sales by 10-30%?
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 5
Want to wow everyone the next time you join a conversation about CRO? Dylan's here to help!
As Bold's resident CRO expert, he'll teach you conversion rate optimization strategies like split testing, heat mapping, and how they actually work.
Today we announce two features will change the game for most subscription, and subscription box companies on Shopify. They're called Convertible Subscriptions and Dynamic Discounts, and our beta users are already doubling and tripling conversions!
By now you’ve read our first blog post and have all the details of your Loyalty Program in place: you’ve chosen what rewards you’re going to offer, what your points system will look like, and you’re ready to launch. Right?
Not quite. There’s one last step you need to put in place before launching: your marketing plan.
With 15 people starting at Bold this month alone, there are a LOT of amazing people to talk about! This month there are two people we feel deserve special mention. Their roles are very unique, and represent a significant milestone for our company.
Take a look below to check out two small changes you can make on your product pages to boost your mobile sales in the next 7 days.
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 4
FEATURED PARTNER: Spently
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could turn all of your emails into marketing opportunities? Well with Spently, you can! We'll talk with Vincent to find out what types of emails you should be focusing on, and how one store used Spently to make $185,000 just from email offers alone.
There might even be a discount code for you at the end :)
Like the amazing entrepreneur you are, we know you’re always looking for new ways to market your business that won’t cost you thousands of dollars. But you're busy, we get it! So we did all the groundwork for you.
Want to grow your subscription business? Justin’s here to help! Watch our webinar as we pick his brain about Lucky Tackle Box: their business model, how they switched their store and subscribers over to Shopify, and even what boxes they subscribe to themselves.
At Bold, #InnovateOrDie is the motto by which we live. If we aren’t continually innovating, we are dying as a company. Every now and then we need to remind ourselves of this. And that’s what #InnovateOrDie days are all about. They are 2 day software development or project challenges, where each member of Bold teams up, chooses a project to work on, and develops it to at least a working demo within 48 hours. It serves to remind us of what we can do with any idea we come up with, and how fast we can get it done, if we really sit down and put our minds to it.
We were so impressed with the CRO work our Managed Services team completed last week, that I stole it just to show you.
They test every element on a page: we call it data driven design. They integrate it into every Shopify project Bold completes with the goal of getting your customers to convert.

SCHOOL OF COMMERCE: LESSON 1
APPS DISCUSSED: INVIID
77% of consumers say they've been convinced to buy a product or service by watching a video. And with the introduction of video commerce, you now have the ability to sell products from your Shopify store inside those videos.
In this webinar, our video commerce expert Dan demonstrates Inviid, a Shopify app that allows you to do just that plus a few more tricks (including tagging those surprisingly lucrative unboxing videos).
Check this out. Email marketing is STILL the number one way to drive traffic to your website. It's the truth! Although there's a feeling that email is an old fashioned way to do business, the stats totally show otherwise. Take a look at these ones:

It was back in the 1920s when it became popular to use a shade over light bulbs instead of just having bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling. During that time, a particular style of shade became popular: the schoolhouse light, which had clean lines and solid light-diffusion for places where good ambient light was necessary.
It's amazing how much can change in a year. Here at Bold, it seems like every year we raise the bar on big changes. With a company as young and quickly growing as ours, 12 months is a very long stretch with a ton of opportunity. And even as we sit down to put together this post, it's mind blowing to look back at where we were just 52 weeks ago. It's almost hard to believe we're the same company! Buckle up as we take you back through the intense ride that was 2016!
The holiday shopping season is the climax of each year’s eCommerce story. Retailers spend months upon months planning logistics and marketing in preparation for the December rush. Customers are anxious because the stakes are high; they have a need that must be met by a certain deadline, and failing will leave them with a ruined holiday (or the embarrassing “It didn’t get here in time” card)! But best of all, it offers an opportunity to set the stage for the year to come. By connecting with new customers, online stores have a ton of opportunities to turn them into regulars and increase the lifetime value of their customers.
This is a Guest Blog Post from Zohar Gilad of InstantSearchPlus.
So, you carefully curated your products, got marketing campaigns going, and have inventory and shipments under control. Now, what about those conversion numbers? How do you increase the likelihood of a store visitor to become a buyer? How do you increase the order size? Or turn them into repeat customers?
Many growing online stores are mastering social media marketing and building communities, yet they’re forgetting one of the core marketing components of an ecommerce business: email marketing.

Winnipeg-based tech company, Bold Commerce, has been named to Startup 50's ranking of Canada’s Top New Growth Companies by Canadian Business and PROFIT.
Bold placed sixth and is the only Manitoba company on the list.
Bold’s high ranking is thanks in part to a 1,257 per cent growth in revenue between 2013 and 2015.
It was the middle of the 1980s when Chris Ruder’s parents purchased a unique game from a toy store. It was a combination of two-on-two beach volleyball and four-square, and it became super popular among the Ruders’ family and friends. But like so many cool inventions, the toy didn't get much marketing attention and after only a year in stores, it was discontinued. However, the Ruders' family and friends were enjoying the game so much, they kept using that same set.
Deep in the heart of the American south, Cabot, Arkansas is a small city 30 minutes northeast of Little Rock. With a population of a little more than 25,000 people, Cabot wouldn’t typically be thought of as a bustling commerce hub.
Cloud services like Shopify provide a great way to set up a store without the burden of maintaining and updating software. However, store owners need to ensure they maintain a high level of security for their store. At Rewind, we encounter lots of people who are surprised to learn that when they delete items in Shopify, they’re gone forever. When even tech CEOs have their online accounts hacked, you need to make sure that your store is as secure as possible. Here are 5 things that you can do to ensure you don’t experience a data disaster.
It was midway through 2011 when Alexandra Cristin graduated college. Although she had studied Marketing and Business Administration, she very quickly realized she didn’t want a traditional job. She saw people all around her in New York City going to work every day at corporate offices, and she knew in her gut that kind of life wasn’t what she wanted.
Just over a year ago, we started working on a project that we weren't even sure could be done. We wanted to create a way you could watch a video, see a product you like, click on it to find out more information, add it to a cart, and checkout right inside the video without ever leaving. Sounds like a tall order right? Well, we took it on!
Snapchat is the new Instagram which was the new Facebook
Do you remember when Facebook started? How about Instagram? When these platforms first took off, everyone and their cat (literally) had accounts. But now, fatigue is starting to set in.
Every day small and large companies are bought out by larger and more valuable companies. Usually they don’t catch my eye, but one recent buyout caught my attention.
Since the launch of our Partner Program just over a year ago, we’ve seen some tremendous success. We've grown to more than 750 Partners in that short time, and expect to be over 1,000 before long.
To celebrate this growth, we’ve introduced new perks within the Partner Program. We have launched an exclusive chat service available only on the Partner Dashboard. We’ve sent three issues of our Partner Newsletter (with a new issue coming every month) where we give exclusive previews, offer tips for our apps and feature select partners (read the latest issue here). We host monthly webinars to teach our Partners about our apps. All this plus numerous other Partner-only benefits.
Today we’re launching another element of this program. Announcing the Partner Program ranks:
When you ask Mandy Bo what kind of music she does, she’ll tell you it’s a style she coined herself as “B’ass Country,” short for Badass Country. It’s a ton of bass, a little bit of Electronic Dance Music, and a whole lot of outlaw country, blended into one. For the past eight years, Bo has dedicated her life to her music career. And now, with the help of Bold Commerce, new fans from all over are discovering her B’ass Country.
As a technology company, we have a pretty discerning eye when it comes to choosing the tech we use to get stuff done around here. Our awesome team is truly our biggest asset but there are a number of non-human tools that have also been key contributors to our rapid growth.

We're excited to announce a new partnership/integration with Kit! What is Kit?
Picture this. You're having a coffee with a friend and you get a text notification on your phone. You look down and see it's a message from Kit. "Hey, we noticed a couple products not selling well. Would you like me to post them on Facebook for you?".
And since we tend to document pretty much everything we do around here, enjoy this little video we put together about the big move and getting settled in. Don’t worry it’s short, but I think it shows how proud we are of our cool new digs. :-)
On February 1, 2016, Bold Commerce, based in Ile des Chenes, and one of Manitoba’s fastest growing tech companies, took the keys of their new company headquarters.
Moving trucks arrived and the company immediately changed the address on its masthead to read 50 Fultz Boulevard, Winnipeg Manitoba, R3Y 0L6.
We had a lot of great things happen around here last week like awards, recognition, and an awesome Christmas party. All the excitement really gave us some time to reflect on what it means to be part of the Bold team. One of the biggest parts of working here is that we are a team, in every sense of the word. If you work here, then you're someone who knows how to work together, how to have each other's backs, and that the best ideas come from mastering those things and working hard.
Black Friday is just about to get started and we wanted to give you the chance to share your awesome Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals! Last year we wrote an article that outlined the top 8 sales you should be running for the holiday season. We didn't know it at the time, but it would turn out to be the most read article we've ever written!
Holidays are the #1 time to capitalize on shoppers. In fact, the next couple months can make or break the bottom line for a lot of stores. Every single holiday day went up from 2013 to 2015, and projections are already saying the online holiday sales will increase EVEN MORE this year!
Our very own Kevin Wild was just recently on the Unofficial Shopify Podcast talking about "How to build Predictable Revenue and Turn Your Store Into a Money Machine with Subscriptions"
With so many exciting things going on here at Bold, we decided to throw it all in one blog post and share it with everyone. In just over 30 months Bold has gone from a few guys in a basement to a company with 62 employees and still growing - faster than ever. In the last month, we hired more people than we did in our entire first year. So needless to say, it's been a bit of a whirlwind.
Today, Shopify announced another amazing partnership. This time with Twitter! They've made it possible to add a buy button to your tweets, and made checking out a breeze. Check out the full announcement and a short video that shows off how easy it is here.
We're excited to announce today we officially added Braintree support to Recurring Orders! For those customers who are unable to sign up for Stripe because of where they live or what they sell, BrainTree is now an option.
Let me answer some of the questions I've been getting asked so you can decipher whether or not this will impact your store.
This year myself (Jason Myers) and Yvan Boisjoli, will be sleeping on the streets of downtown Winnipeg to raise money and awareness of homelessness in Winnipeg. The money raised will go directly to creating employment for the homeless. Roughly every $100 raised pays for one full day of work, and supplies needed.
Migrating from one eCommerce platform to another can be an intimidating task, and can sometimes get pretty confusing. That's why I'm here to help!
You might have read about Shopify's latest announcement, letting anyone with an Amazon webstore make the migration to Shopify with a complete import of all your products and customers and a free 30 day trial. First off, this is awesome!! Shopify will open up so many doors for you, you'll never even give your old Amazon webstore another thought.
In one of our most recent updates to Recurring Orders we added the 'See Details' feature which allows store owners to detail their subscription plan to potential customers.
One piece of feedback we received about Recurring Orders was potential subscribers were unsure what it meant to 'Subscribe and Save.' How does a subscription work? When will I be charged? When will I receive my product? These are just a few questions store owners have to answer on a daily basis.
It's been a crazy few years here at Bold, and it's such an honour when we get nominated for awards. Big or small, we're just having fun doing what we're doing, so when we get recognized for something, it's awesome!
One of the most exciting parts of using Recurring Orders is getting your first subscriber. And the second. And third. Who are we kidding, every new subscriber is exciting!
Once you start gaining subscribers on your store, it's important to have in-depth stats to understand the growth of your store and opportunities therein.
As of right now, you can change the recurring date for a customer's subscription. This means if a customer is subscribed to a monthly plan on the 1st of every month - but would like their order to recur on the 5th of every month instead - you can now make this change for them.
One of the features which we believe separates Recurring Orders apart from other subscription apps on the Shopify App Store is our 'Manage Subscriptions' page.
This page (which you can see below) allows your subscription customers to manage their own subscriptions without having to contact you for help.
We love seeing our customers achieve success using our apps on their Shopify stores. As you may already know, we have over 20 apps on the Shopify App Store. Some help increase store revenue, some make tasks - like managing returns - easy and efficient. Other apps are more comprehensive and are critical to the operation of a store.
One of the things we love doing is finding ways to help small business grow and see success in the "eCommerce" world. So when we have a customer that uses one of our apps to help them hit one out of the park, we get pretty excited about it!
Making the decision to offer subscription products on your Shopify store is only part of the challenge of building a subscription business with recurring revenue.
After setting up your Shopify store with Recurring Orders, the next step is gaining subscribers.
It seems like these days just about everyone is trying to offer subscriptions of some sort on their store. Now you can get everything from your toothpaste to your catfood delivered monthly! Well, if you have a Shopify store, this just got a lot easier to do!
As you might have heard last week, Shopify has been listening to what everyone has been asking for, and announced their new multichannel syncing update. Although this is just the early stages of what they have planned, it is already going to make a huge impact on the way you run your business.
On Friday March 13, 2015 at the 6th annual Spirit of Winnipeg Awards Gala, presented by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Bold Innovation Group Ltd. was given the award for the Startup Business category.
Certainly it had nothing to do with luck...well maybe just a little. A lot of things--a lot of decisions had to happen at the right times and in the right order to get to this point. I’ll tell you where we were lucky.
On February 4, Jay Myers and Yvan Boisjoli, two of Bold's four co-founders were speakers at the annual “Directions” Conference at Red River College in Winnipeg Manitoba. They discussed the obstacles of success as a tech startup in a small market like Winnipeg, and what teachers need to teach and students need to learn to have the best advantages entering the employment market.
Last month, our Commerce team came up with two awesome new custom projects to make your store do some cool things! They’ve created a way to allow Customer Pricing tags control what the price of options on your products. They also created a brand new affiliate tracking app for Taser to pay out commissions on affiliate sales.
In the middle of a typically cold, harsh Winnipeg January, three members of the Bold team were invited down to San Antonio for a little sunshine and a very warm welcome. Jay and Eric - 2 of Bold's founders, and Frank - our senior systems administrator were asked to speak at the annual Rackspace conference attended by all of its 6,000 employees. They delivered a presentation that highlighted the importance of customer support and availability - 2 concepts that are fundamental to the success of both our companies.
Over the years, working as a Shopify Partner, we’ve found that it’s a great community of Designers, Developers, and Store Owners who work together with the common goal of creating the best possible online shopping experience.
2014 is coming to a close and as much as we like looking back at all the great things that happened this year, we’re always planning for what’s to come.

Bold Apps Newsletter
It's been a busy time here at Bold. We've been getting ready for Holiday Shopping, taking care of some much needed app updates, releasing a few new apps, and working on some that will be available in the next few weeks. (Oops, I may have been supposed to keep that a secret). So with everything going on, we figured it'd be a good idea to keep all of our wonderful customers in the loop with an eCommerce newsletter. Here's the lowdown.
"This year shop.org expects online sales to reach $82 billion, a jump of 13 to 15 percent over last year."

We just added a pretty cool little feature to our Product Options app! If you have the premium version of the app, your customers can now edit their options right inside the cart. Before, they would've had to remove the item, go back to the product page and start all over.

Throughout much of its evolution, online retail or eCommerce has been used almost exclusively by consumers to purchase products from around the world and have them shipped right to their doorstep -- People buying things from other places.
Bold Commerce is a relatively new enterprise - a branch of Bold Innovation Group - that has quickly established itself as the go-to company in Winnipeg and Manitoba for online retail services - eCommerce. The evolution of our company has really been sort of a top-down endeavour. The chicken before the egg so to speak, the horse before the cart. What we did is not uncommon in the software industry. We built a great product - in our case, some amazing eCommerce applications - and then decided to build a company around it, once they became popular.
The art of the upsell is as old as commerce itself. From the days of the merchant selling you the cart to go with horse to the pack of gum next to the checkout stand to the ubiquitous "Would you like fries with that?"; these are all forms of “upselling”.
Have you looked at your conversion rates lately and wondered why so many people are failing to complete their purchase? Are you finding that people navigate away from your site after searching through your terms and conditions? Guess what? It’s because they don’t trust you.
Last week Shopify launched their website for the new Shopify Plus account. And while it's been available for several weeks it’s about to get a lot more attention in the tech world, and more importantly from corporate marketing teams.
Good Day eRetailers (eTailers?),
Many of you have already heard of Bold Apps, in fact, that’s how you got on our mailing list. Well, the same guys and gals who brought you such Shopify App Store hits as ‘Product Upsell’, ‘Product Options’, and ‘Customer Pricing’ are now expanding our eCommerce expertise with the newly reformed Bold Commerce department.
Last week we had the pleasure of hanging out at Shopify’s headquarters in Ottawa, spending time with a number of the staff that work there. The four of us were not 100% sure what to expect on the flight down. We of course heard many great things, watched multiple clips on the news about the company and dealt with a lot of the staff. However, just like when spending a week living at someone’s house, you see all the dirty private details of the way they live. The same is with a business.
