November 1, 2014

black-friday-sale-smThe #1 season of the year for online sales in just around the corner! Some stores will do half their entire years sales in one week. Is your Shopify store ready for it?

"This year shop.org expects online sales to reach $82 billion, a jump of 13 to 15 percent over last year."

There's still time to plan and promote sales and we can help! We've put together a list of 8 different AWESOME sales you can run that will make both your customers, and your bank account happy :-)NINJA TIP:You can run one, or a combination of sales. Be creative and start promoting it now! HINT: If you don't have a lot of time, Sale # 8 at the bottom is the easiest and quickest to setup.

SALE TYPE 1: Spend This, Get That!

Deep at the heart of every shopper is a burning desire to spend more. Why not help them! The tried and true BOGO sale is a great type of sale to run on Black Friday and it’s easier than you might think! BOGO simply stands for Buy One Get One but for a quick holiday sale it’s much easier if you give it a little twist.

Rather than Buy One Get One trying running a Spend This, Get That type of sale. For example:

  • Spend $50 get a free gift, or a choice of a few.
  • Spend $100 get a better gift.
  • Spend $200 get a super awesome gift!

How it’s done:

To run this type of sale is easy! Here’s a video that shows how to create the sale. All you do is create the discounted or free item with the Product Discount app and use its "Duplicate and Hide" feature to make the product invisible on your store. Then head over to the Product Upsell app and create an offer that gets triggered at the appropriate amount that includes the discounted or free item. It's that easy!

What apps you need:

product-discount

Product Discount allows you to create sales by product, brand, collection, type or storewide. It can add live countdown timers to products, sales icons, daily deals and a lot more. BUT one powerful tool it has is the ability to create duplicate hidden discounted or free items that can be used with apps like Product Upsell to create "Spend This, Get That" types of sales. Learn more here.

+

product-upsell

Product Upsell allows you to make offers appear based off certain triggers. For example you can make an offer appear when you add a certain product to cart, reach a certain dollar amount in cart or even combinations of both. For this sale you'll set the offer to trigger when a certain dollar amount is in the cart and include the hidden sale item you created with Product Discount. Learn more here.

NINJA TIP: If you wanna supercharge the sale don’t forget to use the motivator app to encourage customers to reach the goal! The Motivator app interactively tells shoppers how much more they need to spend each time they add something to the cart. It’s a great add-on for this type of sale!

SALE TYPE 2: Buy More, Save More!

Some people are enticed by getting a free gift if they buy more, but others just want a discount! For Black Friday why not run a sale like this: Buy two of anything on your store get the second one 30% off, by three of anything get 50% off! Percentages can change, but that's the idea.

You might not know this, but you can actually create quantity breaks like this for your entire store in about 4 clicks! It's an easy but EXTREMELY effective type of sale!

How it’s done:

With the Quantity Breaks app this type of sale can be set up in a few minutes! Here's an instruction video showing how you can create tiered pricing for the holidays.

What app you need:

quantity-breaks

The Quantity Breaks app allows you to create tiered pricing with a few clicks for certain products, or your entire store! You can set it so customers have to buy multiples of one item specifically, (ie. buy 2 or more of the SAME shoe get 50% off) or of any items in a group (ie. buy 2 or more of ANY shoe and get 50% off). Learn more about this app here.

SALE TYPE 3: 50, 40, 30, 20, 10…. GO!

This is one of my personal favourites and very common in the malls on Black Friday. The percentages can vary, but the basic concept is you have sales with descending percentage amounts as time passes. So starting at midnight you might have the entire store at a 50% sale, then at 1:00am move it to a 40% sale, then at 2:00 30% sale and so one…

How it’s done:

It's fairly easy to run this type of sale and you only need one app, Product Discount. All you need to do is create the various sales each starting and ending at the appropriate time.

* The only thing you need to remember is that depending on the amount of products in the sale group it can take a bit of time to start and stop the sale. So you'll need to set them up accordingly. It's always a good idea to do a test sale before Black Friday with the exact products just to see how long it takes to start and stop the sale.

For example, let's say you want to run a sale for 50% off your entire store at midnight, then reduce it to 40% off at 2:00a, then 30% off at 4:00am, and then 20% off at 6:00am and leave it there for the day. And let's say your sale takes 10 minutes to start and stop. This is what your setup in the Product Discount app would look like:

black-friday-rolling-sale

The sales will then automatically start and stop for each percentage amount throughout the night.

What app you need:

product-discount (1)

Product Discount allows you to create sales by product, brand, collection, type or storewide. It can add live countdown timers to products, sales icons, daily deals and a lot more. The key ingredient that you'll be using for this type of sale is the apps "Sale Scheduler". This will automatically start and stop the sales for you while you sleep! Learn more about it here.

NINJA TIP: Make sure to turn on the Countdown Timer feature of the app to add some urgency to the sales. The timer will display the hours, minutes and seconds left on the current sale. It's a LIVE countdown that ticks down in front of them like this: Countdown Timer Example.

SALE TYPE 4: Wrap It Up!

Sometimes the best sale isn't even a sale at all! Adding value to an order can be just as effective as reducing price. If your margins are thin why not offer free giftwrapping for the holidays!

Did you know 30-40% of online purchases during Black Friday and Cyber Monday are intended to be Christmas presents? People are busy this time year and if you offer free gift wrapping and your competitor doesn't, all else being equal, which one do you think they'll buy from? Probably yours!

How it's done:

You might be thinking it would be a nightmare to add a giftwrapping option to every item in your store. With the Product Options app it can actually be done with a couple clicks!

Since you can batch apply options with a couple clicks you can apply "Gift Wrapping" to one product, a collection of products, a brand, product type, or even the whole store! It's easy to add a price to gift wrapping too in the future if you want.

What app you need:

product-options (1)

Product Options allows you to create unlimited types of options and apply in bulk. It has conditional logic to control if options should appear or hide based off previous selections and you can add to the price of a product as well. For this sale you'll use the "Batch Apply" feature to add gift wrapping to your entire store in a couple clicks! Learn more about this app here.

SALE TYPE 5: Get Motivated!

A very common sale people run on their Shopify stores for Black Friday is a simple "Free Shipping" sale. This is a great sale, however the problem is you end up losing on smaller orders. What if there was a way to motivate customers to spend more?

Did you know the majority of shoppers will spend a little more on every purchase if it means getting something free? This year try setting your free shipping at $50 or more and use the Motivator App to encourage them to spend more! It's win-win, they get free shipping, and you don't lose money on the small orders.

How it's done:

The Motivator app is a very simple but effective app. For this type of sale simply create your free shipping in Shopify for a certain dollar amount. Then, set up a goal in the Motivator app that matches that amount.

Now each time a customer adds something to their cart a bar will briefly roll down from the top of the screen politely letting them know how much more they need to spend to get free shipping. It works extremely well!

What app you need:

sales-motivator

The Motivator app helps you tactfully encourage shoppers to spend a little more to reach a goal. For example a free gift, free shipping etc... When running a free shipping promotion at a certain dollar amount this is the perfect app to promote it. Each time a customer adds something to the cart it calculates what they need to spend to get free shipping and briefly displays it.

Also, we just added a feature that allows you to offer spcific promotions by country! You can also now give a way a free gift when a dollar amount in the cart is reached. We just built this into the Premium version of the app :-) Learn more here.

SALE TYPE 6: Bundle it up!

If you have products that compliment or go with each other a bundle sale is a perfect type of sale to run! Bundle sales are a win-win, the customer gets a deal and you get larger checkout sizes.

How it's done:

With the Product Bundles app you can set this up in a few minutes! Bundle sales are similar to a Quantity Break sale (buy two get 30% off, buy three get 40% off) except the main difference between a quantity break and a bundle sale is a bundle needs to have certain required items in it. The required items can be individual products, or products representing certain collections.

So for example the two bundle types could be:

  • Buy this particular hat, this shirt and this jacket and get 25% off
  • Buy any hat, any shirt and any jacket and get 25% off

So even though you may not have time to create bundles for individual products for the holidays, you can create collection bundles (example 2) with just a few clicks!

What app you need:

product-bundles

The Product Bundles app allows you to create "Package Deals", "Buy the Set" and "Bundle Sales" in your store. When a customer has a bundle represented in their cart the app automatically reduces the price by your set percentage. For a Black Friday sale you can use the "Bundle by Collection" feature to quickly create bundles for your whole store in a few clicks! Click here to learn more.

SALE TYPE 7: Category by Category!

Last year we saw a lot of stores run this type of sale with a lot of success. It's an effective sale that can actually keep customers coming back at different times throughout Thanksgiving week, or Black Friday. It's a sale where at different times of the day (or any time period) different sections of your store go on sale.

How it's done:

If you have the Product Discount app it's actually very easy to do! It's similar to the previous sale above where the store went from 50%, 40%, 30% and so on with time. The difference with this sale is rather than changing the percentage every few hours you'll be changing the section of your store that's on sale. You can run it by Collection, by Brand, Product Type, or hand-picked groups of products.

When you have it set up in your Product Discount app it will look something like this:

black-friday-category-sale

So in the example above the sales we'd want to promote on our home page would be:

  • All SHOES 50% off from Midnight until 6:00am
  • All JACKETS 50% off from 6:00am until Noon
  • All ACCESSORIES 50% off from 6:00am until Noon
  • All JACKETS 50% off from 6:00am until Noon

NINJA TIP: Make sure to use the apps "Sale Icon" feature to add a sales flag to each item on the collection and product page. This will really make it clear to customers what items are on sale at what time! Here's an example of a collection page were some items are on sale and some aren't: Sales Icon Example

What app you need:

product-discount (1)

Product Discount allows you to create sales by product, brand, collection, type or storewide. It can add live countdown timers to products, sales icons, daily deals and a lot more. For this type of sale you'll be using the apps "Sale Scheduler" and the ability to batch select categories of your store. It will automatically start and stop the sales for you while you sleep! Learn more about it here.

SALE TYPE 8: Storewide in a click!!

When all else fails, a store wide sale always works! Customers like them too. With the Product Discount app you can put the entire store on sale and add a live countdown timer to every product showing when the sale ends with one click!

NINJA TIP: Make sure to use the apps "Sale Icon" feature to add a sales flag to each item on the collection and product page. This will make it clear that the entire store is on sale!

How it's done:

With the Product Discount app creating store wide discounts is breeze! Just set your timeframe, discount amount, and then when selecting products do a search with no filters selected. This will return all the products in your store. Then just click "Use Filtered Results" and start the sale. It's that easy! Here's a video showing how to run this sale and other tips and tricks with the Product Discount app.

What app you need:

product-discount (1)

Product Discount allows you to create sales by product, brand, collection, type or store-wide. It can add live countdown timers to products, sales icons, daily deals and a lot more. The key ingredient that you'll be using for this type of sale is the apps "Sale Scheduler" and the ability to apply a sale to the entire store. Click here to learn more.
