Until today, if you wanted to run a "Box of the Month" style of subscription on Shopify, where customers get a different product each month, it was difficult or near impossible.
It definitely wasn't automated: it didn't sync well with fulfillment centers as the SKUs didn't change, and inventory was never updated properly.
Today, all that changes! We're very excited to introduce Smart Subscriptions, a module to the new Enterprise plan of Bold Subscriptions that finally makes it possible, and easy!
For years, merchants on Shopify selling subscription boxes with different products that needed to be shipped every month were forced to figure out "work-arounds."
Most subscription apps on Shopify generate an order every month with the same product, or group of products. So if you wanted to offer a subscription box with random or sequential products, the only way you could achieve it was by creating a dummy product called "Subscription Box" (or something similar) and then manually managing the different products for customers every month.
There are obvious problems with this. Customers might accidentally get the same product twice, it's very time consuming, inventory isn't tracked properly in Shopify, orders cannot automatically sync with fulfillment companies, accounting apps and other integrations don't recognize the SKUs, and the list goes on...
Our new Smart Subscriptions module allows you to create subscription boxes with any group of products you want, and then automatically generates an order each month with the products you've selected, in the order you choose!
The key is, it's the actual product, with the proper SKU, so everything (integrations, shipping companies, accounting software, inventory) just work!
For example, if you have a "Sock of the Month" subscription box, and you have 100 pairs of socks, simply enter them all into the app and set up your rules. When a customer subscribes to that subscription box, each month when the app generates the order it first hits the Smart Subscriptions module which returns a SKU. The app then generates the order with that specific sock. It'll even let you set minimum inventory levels so that if any product is running low, it will skip it and resume it the following month.
Here's a great example of one of our merchants, Sock Fancy, already using it
